When Is A Child Old Enough To Have A Social Media Account?

The discussion around what age children should be able to create a social media account is controversial. Social media is a prominent place for kids and adolescents to roam and explore, but it could lead to multiple threats and dangers. Technically, the minimum age required to open an Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Tumblr, or Pinterest account is 13. For other sites like YouTube, the age requirement to have an account is much older than 13 years old. The Children's eSafety Commissioner, Alastair MacGibbon, said: "the technical age limit is arbitrary and it is a parent's responsibility to assess when their child has the social skills for social media, such as judging what to share and with whom."  So, it is up to the parent's to make ethical judgments about their child's readiness. Social media might not be appropriate for all 13-year-olds, but parents should be careful about letting their child open an account at a younger age than that. It is possibly dan...

Some Issues That Should Be Considered When Using Online Sites

There is always going to be a wild and threatening side to using social media or online websites in general. You run the risk of getting hacked or scammed, catching a computer virus, having your personal information leaked, or being preyed upon. These are everyday things that occur everywhere. But there are some issues you should consider to reduce your risk of exposure to these dangers. Be aware of habits like careless clicking. Spam emails, bogus “free” offers, click bait, online quizzes and more all use phishing strategies to lure you to click on dangerous links or submit your personal information. Always be alert for offers that sound too good to be true, or ask for too much info. Also, be attentive to websites that have misspelled words or bad grammar in their addresses. These sites could be copycats of real websites. In all honesty, use your common sense and trust your gut instinct.

My Thoughts On Social Media Sites

Social media sites are outlets that tons of adolescents, young adults, and even younger kids use to voice their opinions or communicate with people nearby and far away. People can choose if they want to be anonymous or have their profile exposed to everyone online. There is this sense of freedom when it comes to how expressive or dull you choose to be on these sites. Some people post artistic and vibrant pictures that cater to their liking; others post lengthy and insightful captions stating their beliefs/opinions, clear-cut and straightforward pictures or nothing at all. This freedom of expression that's so widely seen on social media and the ability to chat or re-connect with people is what I love about it. I use Snapchat to stay connected with friends and family back in Colorado and people here as well; Instagram to view people's silly or creative pictures/videos, and Youtube to watch my favorite content creators and enjoy what they put out.
